ChatGPT Keeps Saying Streaming Interrupted? How to Fix It
Why ChatGPT shows "Streaming interrupted. Waiting for the complete message", how to save the answer that was cut off, and the fixes that stop it happening again.
“Streaming interrupted. Waiting for the complete message” means the live connection that delivers ChatGPT’s reply to your screen dropped before the answer finished, usually because of a network hiccup, a browser extension or VPN getting in the way, or heavy load on OpenAI’s servers. Wait 30 to 60 seconds, copy anything you don’t want to lose, then refresh the page; if the error keeps coming back, work through the fixes below, starting with OpenAI’s status page.
What the error actually means
ChatGPT doesn’t send its answer in one piece. It streams the reply token by token over a persistent connection, which is why you see the text appear gradually. When that connection breaks mid-answer, the app shows “Streaming interrupted” and waits to receive the rest.
OpenAI doesn’t have a help article for this exact wording as of October 2026. Its official error-message guide does say ChatGPT can hit technical problems because of network configuration, browser extensions or temporary server-side issues. It also covers the closely related “A network error occurred” and websocket connection errors, and the fixes it recommends for those apply here too.
Independent guides agree on the usual causes:
- OpenAI-side load or an outage. The Windows Club puts checking server status as the first step.
- An unstable connection, such as weak Wi-Fi, switching between networks, or a phone dropping signal.
- Things that interfere with the connection: VPNs, proxies, secure DNS tools and browser extensions that block scripts or change page content.
- Very long answers or very long threads. Developers on the OpenAI community forum report that streamed responses break mainly when the answer is long and short ones work fine.
First: save the answer you already have
Before you click anything, protect your work.
- Wait 30 to 60 seconds. SmartScope’s write-up of the similar “Connection interrupted” message recommends waiting before you reload, because the reply may still be generating on the server.
- Copy what matters. If you typed a long prompt or the partial answer is useful, copy it somewhere safe. SmartScope notes reports of input text disappearing after a reload. It says those reports are from third parties and it didn’t test this itself, but copying costs nothing.
- Refresh the page (or close and reopen the app). The finished answer often shows up in the conversation after a reload.
- If the answer is still cut off, type “continue” or “please finish your last answer”. You can also regenerate the response. A continued answer won’t always match the original word for word, so check code and anything important carefully where the two parts join.
Fixes if it keeps happening
If you see the error on more than one reply, the cause is probably still there. Go through these roughly in order. They are based on OpenAI’s own troubleshooting steps for connection errors and on the independent guides cited above.
1. Check whether ChatGPT is having problems
Open status.openai.com. If ChatGPT shows degraded performance or an incident, nothing on your end will fully fix it. Wait it out and try again later. If everything is green, keep going.
2. Refresh, then restart the app or browser
A simple reload clears most one-off interruptions. If the error is persistent, quit the browser or the ChatGPT desktop or mobile app completely and reopen it.
3. Turn off VPNs, proxies and secure DNS tools
OpenAI specifically lists VPNs, proxies and secure DNS tools as things to disable when connection errors appear. Switch them off temporarily and test. If the error disappears, try a different VPN server or add ChatGPT to your VPN’s split-tunnel exclusions instead of leaving it off for good.
4. Disable browser extensions
Ad blockers, script blockers, privacy tools and extensions that rewrite pages can break the streaming connection. Quick test: open ChatGPT in an incognito or private window, where most extensions are off by default. If it works there, turn your extensions back on one by one to find the culprit.
5. Try another network, browser or device
This tells you where the problem is:
- Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data (or the other way round).
- Restart your router if your home connection is flaky.
- Try a different browser, or the ChatGPT app instead of the website.
Office, school and public Wi-Fi networks sometimes filter long-lived connections, so a network change is often the quickest fix in those places.
6. Clear cache and cookies, then sign in again
If nothing else has worked, clear the browser’s cache and cookies for ChatGPT, or sign out of ChatGPT and back in. Your chat history is stored in your account, so you won’t lose conversations, but you will need to log in again.
7. Make your requests smaller
If the error mostly appears on huge replies, such as long code files, full reports or big tables, split the job up. Ask for one section or one file at a time, or start a new chat when a thread has grown very long. Shorter replies mean less time for the connection to drop. The same advice comes up in the OpenAI community thread on replies stopping mid-sentence.
Quick reference: which fix for which situation
| What you’re seeing | Most likely cause | Try first |
|---|---|---|
| Happens to everyone, many reports online | OpenAI outage or heavy load | Check status.openai.com and wait |
| Only on one network (work, school, café) | Network filtering or unstable connection | Switch to mobile data or another network |
| Works in incognito but not normally | Browser extension | Disable extensions one by one |
| Only with VPN or proxy on | VPN, proxy or secure DNS | Turn it off or exclude ChatGPT |
| Only on very long answers | Connection open too long | Ask for shorter chunks, “continue” |
| Every browser and device, status is green | Account or session issue | Sign out and back in, then contact support |
When to contact OpenAI support
If the error continues after you’ve tried everything above and the status page shows no incident, contact OpenAI through the official OpenAI Help Center. OpenAI’s troubleshooting guide says to collect browser console logs and a HAR file (a recording of your browser’s network activity), noting when the problem happened, so its team can investigate. Write down the time, your browser and app version, and whether a VPN was running.
Only use OpenAI’s official help channels. Nobody legitimate needs your password to fix this error, so ignore any “support” site or person who asks for it.
Is “streaming interrupted” the same as “Error in message stream”?
They’re closely related. Both mean the reply’s delivery broke partway through, and third-party guides suggest the same fixes for both: check status, refresh, regenerate, and rule out your network and extensions. OpenAI hasn’t published separate explanations of the individual wordings, and the exact messages ChatGPT shows have changed over time and may change again. If you see a slightly different version, such as “Connection interrupted. Waiting for the complete answer”, the steps in this guide still apply.

Frequently asked questions
Is the answer lost when ChatGPT says streaming interrupted? +
Not always. The live connection that pushes text to your screen dropped, but generation may have continued on OpenAI's side, so waiting briefly and then refreshing often shows the full reply. If it doesn't, ask ChatGPT to continue or regenerate the response.
Is the streaming interrupted error my fault or OpenAI's? +
It can be either. Server load or an outage on OpenAI's side causes it, but so do unstable Wi-Fi, VPNs, proxies, secure DNS tools and browser extensions. Check status.openai.com first; if everything is green, the problem is most likely on your side.
Why does it only happen on long answers? +
Long replies keep the connection open longer, so there is more time for a network hiccup or timeout to break it. Developers on OpenAI's community forum report the same pattern with long streamed responses. Splitting a big request into smaller parts helps.
Will clearing my cache delete my ChatGPT chats? +
No. Your conversations are stored in your OpenAI account, not in the browser cache. Clearing cache and cookies will sign you out, so you just need to log in again afterwards.
