ChatGPT 6 Astra: What GPT-6 Astra Is and Who Can Use It
What people mean by ChatGPT 6 Astra: OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra model, which ChatGPT plans include it, how usage limits work, and what the API costs as of October 2026.
“ChatGPT 6 Astra” is OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra, the top model in the GPT-6 family, which OpenAI announced on September 3, 2026. It is aimed at long, multistep work such as computer use, coding and research. In ChatGPT it is available only on paid plans, and how you get it depends on which plan you have.
Below we cover what Astra is, where it sits next to the other GPT-6 models, which plans include it, how its usage limits work and what developers pay. All details are as of October 22, 2026. OpenAI has changed access rules several times since launch, so check the linked official pages before you rely on anything.
What GPT-6 Astra actually is
OpenAI’s launch post calls Astra its most intelligent and aligned model. It claims state-of-the-art results in computer use, browsing, software engineering, cybersecurity and science. The pitch is “agentic” work: give it a goal, and it works through the steps itself, from browsing and writing code to producing documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
A few points are worth knowing up front:
- The name. “ChatGPT 6” is not an official product name. ChatGPT is the app; GPT-6 Astra is one of the models it can run. Search engines and YouTube autocomplete merge the two, which is why “chatgpt 6 astra” is trending.
- It is not the default chat model. Astra is the premium tier. Everyday chats in ChatGPT run on lighter GPT-6 models (see the next section).
- It ships with tighter safety controls. OpenAI’s system card says Astra is the first model to reach the “Critical” cybersecurity capability level under its Preparedness Framework. The public version therefore refuses some security-related prompts. OpenAI also says Astra has extra monitoring for cases where an agent may have misread your instructions, and that such conversations can be paused or stopped for review.
Astra, Sol and Luna: the GPT-6 lineup
OpenAI released GPT-6 as a family rather than a single model. Here is how the three names fit together, based on OpenAI’s help center and coverage such as Yotta Labs’ overview:
| Model | Role | Where you meet it |
|---|---|---|
| GPT-6 Astra | Most capable, built for long agentic tasks | Work and Codex on paid plans; powers GPT-6 Pro in Chat on higher tiers; API as gpt-6-astra |
| GPT-6 Sol | Default chat model for paid users | Chat tab on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise |
| GPT-6 Luna | Lighter model | Chat tab on Free and Go |
Secondary sources report that GPT-6 Sol began replacing GPT-5.6 Sol as the paid Chat default on October 7, and that GPT-6 Luna reached Free and Go users from October 8. At least one OpenAI help article we saw still referred to GPT-5.6 Luna for free users, probably because it predates that rollout. OpenAI has also announced a GPT-6.1 Sol update. Model names in the picker may not match older articles exactly.
Which ChatGPT plans include Astra
Most of the confusion is here. OpenAI’s launch post said Astra would reach “all ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users” over the following days. The help center article on GPT-6 models is more specific:
- Free and Go: no Astra access.
- Plus: Astra is included in ChatGPT Work and Codex, with usage limits. It is not listed for the standard Chat tab, and the highest reasoning-effort settings are not included.
- Pro, Business and Enterprise: these plans also get GPT-6 Pro in Chat, which OpenAI says is powered by Astra.
- Enterprise: an admin has to enable Astra for the workspace. At launch it was off by default.
Plus subscribers expected Astra in regular Chat and complained on the OpenAI Developer Community forum. A later reply in that thread says Astra has since rolled out more widely to Plus and Business. We could not confirm that in OpenAI’s documentation, so treat the help center as the authority and expect it to change.
How to check whether you have it
- Open ChatGPT on the web or in the desktop app and sign in.
- Switch to Work (or open Codex) if you are on Plus. On Pro, Business or Enterprise, also check the model picker in Chat for GPT-6 Pro.
- If Astra doesn’t appear on a Business or Enterprise workspace, ask your workspace admin whether it has been enabled.
- Go to Settings → Usage to see your remaining allowance and when it resets.
If you still can’t find it, the official help center and in-app support are the right places to ask. Ignore third-party sites or extensions that promise “Astra access” outside your plan.
How Astra usage limits work
Astra is expensive to run, and OpenAI meters it differently from ordinary chat. According to the help article Managing usage with GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex:
- There is no fixed message count. Your allowance is measured in work, not messages. How far it goes depends on the model, the task and your settings.
- Two windows can apply. Depending on your plan, a five-hour window and a weekly window may both limit you, and you need allowance left in both. You can run out of the five-hour window early even with weekly allowance remaining.
- Rough capacity on Plus. For Plus and Business Standard seats, OpenAI’s estimate is about 5 to 45 local Astra messages per five-hour window. It stresses that this is an estimate, not a guarantee.
- Pro tiers. The article says Pro tiers currently have no five-hour limit in Work and Codex, but they still have an included allowance.
- What burns allowance faster. Large inputs and outputs, higher reasoning effort, multistep tasks and Fast mode all use more allowance. OpenAI says Astra uses allowance faster than GPT-5.6 Sol.
- Credits extend usage but don’t grant access. You can buy credits for extra usage. Credits won’t unlock Astra on a plan that doesn’t include it, and OpenAI Support can’t reset your limits.
In practice, use Astra for the jobs that benefit from it, such as a multi-file code change, a research task with many steps or a full spreadsheet build. Leave quick questions to the default Chat model.
GPT-6 Astra in the API
Developers can call Astra directly. OpenAI’s model page lists:
- Model ID:
gpt-6-astra - Context window: 1,050,000 tokens, with up to 128,000 output tokens
- Knowledge cutoff: April 30, 2026
- Standard pricing: $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, with cached input at $1 per million
- Long prompts: requests over 272K input tokens are billed at 2x the input rate and 1.5x the output rate for the whole request
- Batch: listed at half the standard price
OpenAI’s pricing page also lists faster, more expensive processing tiers. Astra is available through Amazon Bedrock too. For anything you budget against, use OpenAI’s live pricing page, because these figures are the most likely to change.
Is it worth it?
If most of your ChatGPT use is quick questions and drafting, the default GPT-6 Sol (or Luna on Free) will cover it, and Astra’s metered allowance won’t add much. Astra makes more sense if you hand ChatGPT longer jobs: agentic coding in Codex, multistep research or building finished documents. On Plus you can try it in Work and Codex without upgrading. Keep an eye on Settings → Usage, because the five-hour window runs out fast on heavy tasks.
Security professionals should expect refusals on some requests. That is a deliberate restriction from OpenAI, not a bug, and the official route to fuller access is OpenAI’s trusted-access program for organizations.

Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT 6 Astra the same as GPT-6 Astra? +
Yes. There is no product called ChatGPT 6. GPT-6 Astra is the model, and ChatGPT is one of the apps where you can use it, alongside Codex and OpenAI's API.
Can I use GPT-6 Astra on the free ChatGPT plan? +
No. OpenAI's help center lists Astra access only for paid plans. Free and Go users get the lighter GPT-6 Luna model in Chat instead.
Why don't I see Astra in the regular Chat model picker on Plus? +
OpenAI's help center says Plus includes Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, not standard Chat. Some forum posts report a wider rollout, but check the help center for the current status before assuming it has changed.
Why did Astra refuse my security question? +
OpenAI ships Astra with extra safeguards around cybersecurity because its system card rates it at the Critical cyber capability level. Some security requests are refused by design, and fuller access runs through a separate trusted-access program for organizations.
How much does GPT-6 Astra cost in the API? +
OpenAI's API docs list $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens at standard rates, with higher rates for prompts above 272K tokens. Check OpenAI's pricing page before budgeting, as rates can change.
