ChatGPT in October 2026: GPT-6, Intelligent UI and Which Plan to Pick
What changed in ChatGPT this week, which GPT-6 model each plan gets, what Go, Plus and Pro cost as of October 2026, and how to install the official app safely.
ChatGPT is OpenAI’s AI assistant, and it is near the top of the App Store this week mostly because of a big update: on October 7, 2026, OpenAI began rolling out a new GPT-6 model and a feature it calls Intelligent UI to everyone. Paid plans get GPT-6 Sol, Free and Go users started getting GPT-6 Luna from October 8, and the basic app remains free to download and use.
Below is what actually changed, what each plan gets and costs, and how to make sure you are installing the real app. Details are as of October 10, 2026, and this rollout is still moving, so expect some of it to change.
What changed in ChatGPT this week
GPT-6 arrives in the regular chat
GPT-6 is not a single model. OpenAI has released it as a family over several weeks:
- GPT-6 Astra was announced on September 3, 2026, starting with a limited set of organizations, with wider access to paid ChatGPT plans, the API and cloud platforms to follow (OpenAI).
- GPT-6 Sol and Luna are the mid-tier and lower-cost models, also available to developers in the API as
gpt-6-solandgpt-6-luna(OpenAI). That page also mentions a “GPT-6.1 Sol” update dated September 29. - The consumer rollout came on October 7, when OpenAI’s GPT-6 for everyone post announced a new GPT-6 model rolling out globally in ChatGPT.
According to Notebookcheck, Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users get GPT-6 Sol in Chat, while Free and Go users began getting GPT-6 Luna on October 8. Other coverage says GPT-6 takes over from the GPT-5.6 Sol and Luna models those plans used before.
Intelligent UI: answers you can tap
The other headline feature is Intelligent UI. Instead of only replying in text, ChatGPT can now build interactive pieces inside a response, such as visuals, charts, forms and tappable controls. In practice that means a comparison might come back as a chart you can explore, or a planning question might come back with a small form to fill in.
Two practical notes from early coverage:
- Intelligent UI reportedly has no separate usage quota; your plan’s normal limits apply.
- The older ChatGPT desktop apps for Windows and macOS do not support it, and OpenAI recommends the web version for those users (Notebookcheck).
OpenAI’s own docs are still catching up
If something you read on OpenAI’s site looks contradictory, you are not imagining it. Notebookcheck points out that OpenAI’s help page on models still named GPT-5.6 Luna as the Free and Go default at the time of writing, while the release notes mention GPT-6 Luna. Treat the release notes and announcement posts as the more current source until the help pages are updated.
ChatGPT plans and prices compared
OpenAI’s pricing page is the final word, and we were not able to confirm every figure against it directly. The table below reflects what multiple independent pricing trackers, including CloudZero, report as of October 2026, plus the model assignments reported for the GPT-6 rollout.
| Plan | Reported price | Chat model (Oct 2026) | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | GPT-6 Luna | Trying ChatGPT, light everyday use |
| Go | about $8/month | GPT-6 Luna | More volume on a budget; ads in some regions |
| Plus | $20/month | GPT-6 Sol | Regular users who want the stronger model and tools |
| Pro | $100 or $200/month | GPT-6 Sol | Heavy users who keep hitting Plus limits |
| Business | roughly $20-$25 per user/month | GPT-6 Sol | Teams that need admin controls |
| Enterprise | custom | GPT-6 Sol | Large organizations |
A few things to keep in mind:
- Pro tiers are in flux. Trackers describe the $100 tier as roughly 5x Plus usage and the $200 tier as roughly 20x. One source says new sign-ups for the $200 tier were paused from September 10, 2026, and another reports a new $500 tier added in late September. We could not confirm either claim, so check the official pricing page before upgrading.
- Business pricing depends on billing. Sources list about $20 per user per month billed annually and $25 billed monthly.
- Free-tier limits. In August, Help Net Security reported that OpenAI removed the rate limit on text conversations for free users (subject to “abuse guardrails”), while keeping limits on file uploads, images and other tools. That applied to GPT-5.6 Luna. We have not seen confirmation that the same policy carries over to GPT-6 Luna.
Which plan should you pick?
For most people, start on Free. You now get a GPT-6 model and Intelligent UI at no cost, which is enough to decide whether ChatGPT fits your routine. Move to Plus if you want GPT-6 Sol and run into tool limits regularly. Go only makes sense if you want more volume than Free but don’t need the Sol model, and you’re fine with ads where they apply. Pro is for people who use ChatGPT for hours a day and have already hit Plus ceilings.
How to get the official ChatGPT app
Because ChatGPT is trending, copycat apps tend to climb the charts too. Fake ChatGPT apps have been used to charge people for features that are free in the real app, or worse (TechRadar). To install the right one:
- Open the App Store on iPhone or iPad (or Google Play on Android).
- Search for “ChatGPT” and check that the developer listed is OpenAI.
- Install the app and sign in with your OpenAI account, or create one from inside the app.
- If you want a paid plan, subscribe from inside the official app or at chatgpt.com, not through a third-party site.
On a computer, you can simply use chatgpt.com in your browser. If you use the desktop app on Windows, macOS or Linux, update it to the latest version, since early reports note that older desktop builds don’t support Intelligent UI.
Getting the most out of the update
Try prompts that benefit from Intelligent UI
Intelligent UI is most useful when the answer has structure. Good tests include asking ChatGPT to compare a few options side by side, build a simple budget or schedule, or turn data you paste in into a chart. If you only get plain text back, your account may not have the update yet.
Don’t panic if you don’t see GPT-6
The rollout is staged and, per Notebookcheck, OpenAI hasn’t said exactly when a given account will get it. There is no official way to jump the queue, so keep the app updated and give it a few days.
Check privacy and data settings
Whenever a major update lands, it is worth opening Settings and reviewing your data controls, memory, and connected apps. That is especially true if you share the account with family members or use it for work.
The bottom line
ChatGPT’s spike in downloads is driven by a real change: GPT-6 is now the default chat model on every plan, with the cheaper Luna version on Free and Go and the stronger Sol version on paid plans, plus a new interactive answer format. The free tier is the easiest way to try it. Just make sure the app you install is published by OpenAI, and check current prices on OpenAI’s site before paying, because the Pro tiers in particular have shifted several times this autumn.

Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT still free to use? +
Yes. The Free plan costs nothing and, as of October 8, 2026, is getting GPT-6 Luna in the regular Chat tab. Uploads, image generation and other tools still have limits on the Free plan.
What is the difference between GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna? +
OpenAI describes Sol as the mid-tier GPT-6 model and Luna as the lower-cost one. In ChatGPT, paid plans (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise) get Sol, while Free and Go get Luna.
Why don't I see GPT-6 or Intelligent UI yet? +
The rollout is staged, and reports say OpenAI has not said exactly when each account will get it. If you use an older Windows or macOS desktop app, Intelligent UI is reportedly not supported there, so try the web version or update the app.
How do I avoid fake ChatGPT apps? +
Install only the app published by OpenAI in Apple's App Store or Google Play, or use chatgpt.com in a browser. Copycat apps have been used to push paid subscriptions for features that are free in the real app.
