Fortnite AI Explained: AI NPCs, Conversations and Parental Controls
What Fortnite AI actually is in 2026: how LLM-powered NPC conversations work, where you can talk to them, what tech runs them, and how parents control access.
“Fortnite AI” mostly means one thing in 2026: NPCs you can actually talk to, by voice or text, that answer in real time using a large language model. Epic calls the system conversations, and since July 30, 2026, creators can publish islands with these AI characters in them. It is not part of standard Battle Royale.
Below is what the feature is, where you will run into it, what powers it, and how privacy and parental controls work. Everything here is accurate as of October 2026, and Epic is still changing the system, so details may shift.
Where Fortnite AI came from: the Darth Vader NPC
Most players first met Fortnite AI in May 2025, when Epic added an AI-voiced Darth Vader during the Star Wars-themed Galactic Battle season. You could ask Vader questions and he answered on the fly.
According to eWeek, Fortnite’s FAQ said the dialogue came from Google’s Gemini 2.0 Flash and the voice from ElevenLabs’ Flash v2.5 model. The voice was based on James Earl Jones, and his estate approved its use.
It did not go smoothly. Players soon got Vader to swear, and Epic patched it quickly. SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union, also filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board. The union said Epic’s subsidiary Llama Productions had brought in the AI voice without bargaining with it first. That dispute is still the background to every conversation about AI voices in Fortnite.
What the conversations system is
After Vader, Epic turned the technology into a tool for creators. It was shown at State of Unreal 2025 as the Persona device. In April 2026 Epic released it in Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) as an experimental feature called conversations (Fortnite News). At that point creators could build and test with it but could not publish islands that used it.
That changed in the v41.30 update. Epic’s announcement said conversations would leave Experimental on July 30, 2026, so creators could publish islands with LLM-powered NPCs. The v41.30 release notes also added a conversations tab in the Creator Portal, with charts and metrics on how players engage.
What AI NPCs can do
Coverage of the launch says creators set a character’s personality, knowledge and behavior with a written prompt, and it can be short. The characters can:
- Answer spoken or typed questions in real time, without a fixed dialogue tree
- Remember what a player did during the current session
- React to what players do and trigger gameplay outcomes, such as handing out a quest or opening a path
The 36 voiced Fortnite characters
Epic also gave consistent voices and personas to 36 existing Fortnite characters so creators can use them as NPCs, with more planned. Press coverage, including VGC, names characters such as Fishstick and Haylee Skye.
Two details matter here:
- Voice sourcing. Epic says the voices come from performances it captured from independent professional actors, specifically for creator islands. It also says it plans to work with the relevant guilds and with actors who have voiced these characters in Battle Royale to explore making their original voices more widely available.
- Locked characters. Some Fortnite characters are locked to their set voice and persona, and creators cannot edit them. The v41.30 notes name Peely, Midas and Brite Bomber as examples. Epic’s wording and the press coverage describe the locked group slightly differently, so check the in-editor list for the exact set.
What technology powers it
| Feature | Dialogue model | Voice | Status (Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Darth Vader NPC (2025) | Gemini 2.0 Flash | ElevenLabs Flash v2.5 | Seasonal, Battle Royale |
| Conversations / AI NPCs (2026) | Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite (reported) | ElevenLabs | Live on creator islands |
The 2026 model details come from reporting such as Wccftech, and one early report named a different Gemini version. Treat the exact model as something Epic can swap out. Epic has also said it may add rate limiting over time if it needs to manage usage.
Rules creators must follow
Islands that use conversations still go through Epic’s normal publishing process: the Fortnite Developer Rules, moderation and technical validation. Reports on the launch say creators may not build AI characters that give medical advice, act as a romantic partner, or try to get around the system’s safety rules, and that breaking these rules can lead to bans.
If you are a creator, start with Epic’s LLM conversations documentation rather than third-party tutorials. Menu names and device setup have changed between UEFN versions.
Privacy: what happens to your voice
Epic’s developer documentation says Gemini generates the character’s reply through Google Cloud’s processing pipeline, which handles the voice interaction, and that Epic does not store player audio. If an AI character says something it shouldn’t, you can report it the same way you report other in-game problems.
Parental controls for AI characters
Talking to AI characters has its own setting, separate from normal voice and text chat. According to Epic’s help page, a parent or guardian can turn it on like this:
- Open Parental Controls from the Fortnite main menu, or sign in to your child’s Epic account settings on the web.
- Scroll to the bottom of the settings, to the AI Features section.
- Turn on Allow voice and written communication with AI Features.
- Save your changes.
Some things to know:
- With this setting on, the player can talk to AI features across Epic’s products by voice and text. It does not cover AI-powered player support.
- For a child with a cabined account, the parent has to finish setting up the account before they can grant this permission.
- This setting is separate from Fortnite’s normal Text Chat and Voice Chat settings, and it does not change those.
If an island’s AI character won’t respond to your child, check this setting first.
What’s still unclear
Some questions don’t have firm answers yet:
- Voice actors. Epic says it is working with guilds and actors, but the SAG-AFTRA dispute from the Vader NPC is the backdrop, and how original voices get used in future is still open.
- Battle Royale. Epic’s 2026 announcements describe conversations as a creator-island feature. We found no confirmed plan to put AI NPCs into core Battle Royale.
- Limits and costs for creators. Epic has said it may add rate limiting but hasn’t published details.
The short version
Fortnite AI means LLM-powered NPCs you can talk to. They started with the 2025 Darth Vader experiment and are now a public creator tool called conversations, which became publishable on July 30, 2026. You’ll find them on creator islands, not in standard Battle Royale. Epic says it doesn’t store your voice, and parents control access with a single AI Features toggle. Expect the models, the list of voiced characters and the rules to keep changing, and check Epic’s own news and help pages for the latest.

Frequently asked questions
Can I talk to AI characters in regular Fortnite Battle Royale? +
Generally no. As of October 2026, Epic's LLM-powered conversations are a creator feature for islands built in Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), not a standard Battle Royale feature. The 2025 Darth Vader NPC was a one-off seasonal exception.
Does Fortnite record what I say to AI NPCs? +
Epic's developer documentation says player voice is processed through Google Cloud so Gemini can generate a reply, and that Epic does not store player audio. You can still report a character that responds inappropriately.
Why can't my child talk to AI characters in Fortnite? +
Talking to AI characters is controlled by a parental setting called 'Allow voice and written communication with AI Features'. A parent has to turn it on, and for cabined accounts the parent must first finish setting up the account.
What AI model powers Fortnite NPCs? +
Coverage of the 2026 conversations system reports Google's Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite for responses and ElevenLabs for the voices. The 2025 Darth Vader NPC used Gemini 2.0 Flash and ElevenLabs Flash v2.5. Epic may change these models over time.
